Asuka was born in Los Angeles, raised in Japan, educated in Boston, and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. Using curiosity and a love of learning as guiding principles, she makes books, zines, and prints that investigate how ideas, images, and ways of making evolve as they are shared, adapted, and reinterpreted over time. Drawing inspiration from public-domain publications, historical documents, and everyday observations, she uses bookmaking and printmaking to ask questions, make connections, and discover new possibilities.
She received a BFA in printmaking from California State University, Long Beach, and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. She has taught printmaking and bookmaking at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, San Francisco Art Institute, Parsons School of Design, Penland School of Craft, and Montclair State University. She is currently pursuing further studies in textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
